Jackson’s comments even worse?

On his show — which played the Jesse Jackson tape that Fox News is releasing — Bill O’Reilly noted that “what we have is worse”, more damaging, than what they’ve broadcast.  With his smile-while-you-stab-’em style, O’Reilly said they weren’t broadcasting the rest because they’re “not out to get Jesse Jackson”.

What context were the remarks made in?  What else did the “hot mic” pick up?  Or is O’Reilly just dissembling and falsely claiming that the rest of the tape is “worse”, knowing it won’t be released?  What could Jackson have said that’s worse than expressing his desire to “cut [Obama's] nuts… Continue reading...

Jesse Jackson: Foot in mouth, repeat.

Jesse Jackson is all over CNN, in full-on damage control mode over comments he made about Obama that haven’t even become public yet (but obviously will).  Such a media-savvy guy; is he trying to do damage-control, or is he trying to hype the comments?  A public fight with Jackson would certainly help Obama a la a Bill Clinton and Sistah Souljah.

My guess is that it’s damage-control, and Jackson has the connections and political savvy to understand the ramifications of what he said and to begin to try to limit the damage.  Whatever he said, it must be pretty… Continue reading...

Leadership in the first hours of the general election campaign

Within the first few days (weeks? months?) of becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee, Sen. Barack Obama has made two moves to begin bringing his party back together. First, he reached out to the progressive, “netroots” base of the party by retaining Howard Dean as chair of the DNC, and ordering the DNC to stop accepting donations from registered Federal lobbyists. (He also buttonholed Lieberman on the floor of the Senate, LBJ-style, appeasing the roots who are dissatisfied by the former VP-nominee’s support of McCain and potentially neutralizing one of McCain’s strongest public allies).
